Botox is the number one cosmetic procedure in the United States. Botox was introduced in the late 1980’s for the treatment of optic muscle disorders. In 2002, it was approved by the FDA for cosmetic use, helping millions of patients get rid of nagging facial lines and wrinkles.
How Botox Works
Botox blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. The injected muscles can no longer contract, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften. It is most often used on forehead lines, crow's feet (lines around the eye) and frown lines.
How Is the Procedure Performed?
The procedure takes only a few minutes and no anesthesia is required. Botox is injected with a fine needle into specific muscles with only minor discomfort. It’s best to avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory medication two weeks before treatment to reduce the possibility bruising.
How long does it last?
Results generally last 3-4 months. As muscle action gradually returns, the lines and wrinkles begin to re-appear and will need to be retreated; however, over time, lines and wrinkles may appear less severe because the muscles are being trained to relax.
What are the side effects of Botox?
The most common side effects of Botox include headache, nausea, and redness or minor pain at the injection sites; however, most patients do not experience any adverse reactions. Infrequently, patients may experience muscle weakness or drooping of the upper eyelid muscles. This side effect usually resolves itself within days, or in rare cases, months after the procedure.
Who Should Not Receive Botox Injection?
Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a neurological disease should not use Botox. Since Botox doesn't work for all wrinkles, a consultation with an experienced medical provider is recommended.
Treatment care after Botox
Botox does not require any downtime and normal activities can be resumed immediately after the procedure; however, patients are advised to avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours, refrain from lying down for 4-5 hours and to avoid massaging the treated area.
